Music That Takes Me Places

LIQUID PENNIES, FORE

Liquid Pennies
Since forming in 2018, St. Petersburg, FL trio Liquid Pennies have never stayed in one lane, pulling from psych rock, post-punk, prog, punk, electronics, and whatever else sparks their interest. On their fourth album, Fore, the band synthesizes those impulses into something layered, textured, and at times unpredictable, yet always grounded by rhythm and melody.

A big part of the record’s sound comes from working with producer Ryan Boesch. Known for his work with the Melvins, St. Vincent, and Foo Fighters, Boesch guided a hybrid approach: drums tracked in the studio, guitars and vocals at home, then fused with strings and electronics. The result is a mix that left space to experiment while keeping the sound sharp and focused.

Musically, Fore feels sprawling but never aimless, with a dense and expansive feel that balances precision with moments of frenzy. The album’s centerpiece, “Echodalia,” stretches past eleven minutes, weaving prog-inspired riffs, shifting rhythms, and bursts of improvisation. “The Bone” builds from acoustic beginnings into a string-laced arrangement that eventually locks into a driving groove. Across the record, drum machines and sequencers color the mix, pushing songs in new directions.

Fore is a thrilling album that thrives on transformation with songs changing course midstream, styles colliding, and unexpected layers emerging. It captures Liquid Pennies in full experimental mode, creating music that resists easy definition but is so intriguing and dynamic that I have come back to Fore again and again since that first listen.
