Ezra Koenig has done it again. Only God Was Above Us, Vampire Weekend’s fifth album, finds him blending pop, baroque pop, Afro-pop, and classical influences into a soundscape that is unmistakably his. The arrangements are layered but never crowded, pairing intricate instrumentation with sharp, observant lyrics. It is an album that rewards close listening while still delivering the hooks and melodic turns that have defined the band’s best work. Another reminder that Vampire Weekend continues to evolve without losing its distinct identity.
