I've been a big fan of The Pineapple Thief since discovering them through their 2018 album, Dissolution. Led by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Bruce Soord, the English progressive rock band has been making music since 1999, and more than twenty-five years later, they're still making some of their best music. It Leads To This, their fifteenth studio album, is a great example.
The album was several years in the making, with much of the writing taking place during the pandemic. Soord found himself reflecting on the state of the world, the mistakes we've made, and what kind of future we're leaving for our children. He has said that the title, It Leads To This, could just as easily have been a question. Are we destined to end up where we're heading, or can we still do something to change it?
Musically, It Leads To This is also the result of a particularly collaborative period for the band. Soord and drummer Gavin Harrison spent considerable time writing together, something they hadn't done to this extent on previous albums. The two challenged each other throughout the process, developing songs that combine the band's wonderful sense of melody with some intricate arrangements and terrific playing. Harrison is such an exceptional drummer, and his contributions have become an increasingly important part of what makes The Pineapple Thief so good since joining the band in 2016.
It's great to see a band still going at it and at the top of their game after twenty-five years. It Leads To This is another terrific album from The Pineapple Thief.
