BLACK PAINT, BLACK PAINT

Black Paint are a three piece alternative rock band from Ajax, Ontario, made up of Steven Layzell on vocals and guitar, Tyler Smith on bass, and Eric Croteau on drums. The three have been playing together in one form or another since high school, eventually becoming Black Paint in 2020. Six years later, they’ve released their self titled debut album. 

The three spent years developing these songs before releasing their debut, many of them growing out of jams and continuing to change as the band played them live. That’s a big part of the band's approach to making music. As they’ve said, “We are first and foremost a live band.”

The band cites The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, and Rage Against the Machine among its influences, and you can certainly hear pieces of all three. You can also hear The Black Keys, which is never a bad thing. With big guitar riffs, a powerful rhythm section, and plenty of moments where the three musicians simply sound like they’re having a blast playing together, their debut album is all beef and no filler. 

This is a great debut album and a very cool introduction to Black Paint.
