Beefheart & McQuinn is a project from UK artist Moby Beefheart, aka William Murray, formerly of the band Fur, and Melbourne/Naarm musician Winter McQuinn of Sunfruits and jade imagine. The two connected after a chance meeting over coffee, forming a partnership rooted in a shared appreciation for folk and rock sounds of earlier eras. They began blending vocal harmonies with acoustic guitar driven arrangements, leading into their debut album, Midtown Downtime.
On Midtown Downtime, Beefheart & McQuinn serve up a collection of songs that lean into psychedelic folk and soft rock, shaped by beautiful vocal harmonies and an understated warmth. Across the record, the duo balances direct songwriting with more open passages as they explore the tensions of time and productivity in modern life while moving through themes of love, friendship, and nostalgia.
At just twenty seven minutes, the album is meant to be experienced in a single sitting. I could not get enough of it and found myself listening to it multiple times back to back. It’s a gem of an album, and one that I hope finds a wide audience.
