Music That Takes Me Places

TIANA MAJOR9, NOVEMBER SCORPIO

Tiana Major9

Tiana Major9, born Tiana Thomas Ambersley, is a singer and songwriter from East London who grew up in a Jamaican household and began singing in church as a child. She later studied music in college and signed with Motown at 23. Her stage name comes from the major ninth chord, which she has described as one of her favorite sounds.

Tiana Major9 first introduced her music through a series of singles, EPs, and collaborations. She reached a wider audience through “Collide” with EarthGang on the Queen & Slim soundtrack, which received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song, and she also appeared on Stormzy’s Heavy Is the Head. Those releases helped establish Major9 within the R&B and Black British music scene. Now she has released her debut album, November Scorpio.

Major9 has said that November Scorpio is an honest reflection of her life, with love, identity, money, faith, and desire at the center of the album. Musically, Major9 has pointed to Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo, Stevie Wonder, Amy Winehouse, and BeyoncĂ© among her influences, while also grounding her sound in gospel and in her Jamaican upbringing. On November Scorpio, Major9 brings all of this together into a smooth and sophisticated blend of R&B, jazz, gospel, hip hop, and reggae that I just loved. It’s a great introduction to Major9 and her music.
