I had never heard of Ratboys before I heard Happy Birthday, their new surprise album released on the 10th anniversary of the release of their first EP. It's a stripped-down, lo-fi album with laid-back beats. The songs are short and unpolished, built around simple loops and muted vocals that feel more like passing thoughts than full statements. There’s a casual, almost offhand tone to the whole thing, but that’s part of the appeal. It sounds like someone processing feelings in real time without dressing them up.
